NICE guideline NG87 sets out who can diagnose ADHD in the UK:

“ADHD should only be diagnosed by a specialist psychiatrist, paediatrician or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional with training and expertise in diagnosing ADHD.”

A full eight hours, built around four case studies and structured breakout work. You will spend as much time reasoning through real presentations as you will listening.

Yes. The course is aimed at mixed experience levels. The morning covers assessment foundations and structured diagnostic interviewing, and the afternoon covers rating scales, differential diagnosis and clinical reasoning.

NICE guideline NG87 states that ADHD should only be diagnosed by a specialist psychiatrist, paediatrician or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional with training and expertise in diagnosing ADHD. Diagnosis is therefore not restricted to psychiatrists, but it does require appropriate qualification, structured training and demonstrable expertise, within your professional scope of practice.

Yes, where the nurse is appropriately qualified, has both training and expertise in ADHD diagnosis, and is working within their scope of practice with appropriate supervision and indemnity in place. NICE NG87 does not limit diagnosis to psychiatrists and paediatricians, but it does set a genuine competence requirement rather than simply a training requirement.

OTs and SLTs are HCPC-registered healthcare professionals, so NICE NG87 does not exclude them. In practice the position depends on your role, your employer's governance and your indemnity cover. Many allied health professionals use this training to contribute to a multidisciplinary assessment rather than to diagnose independently. If independent diagnosis is your goal, confirm your position with the HCPC and your indemnity provider before booking.

No. Assessment and prescribing are separate activities. This course covers assessment and diagnosis only. Many ADHD assessors do not prescribe and refer on for medication where it is indicated.

Training is one component of being appropriately qualified, alongside professional registration, supervised experience and indemnity. This course provides the training. Most people should expect to work under supervision initially while building case experience. We cover what to arrange on the day rather than leaving you to find out afterwards.

The DIVA-5 is the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults, a structured diagnostic interview built around DSM-5 criteria. It works through each criterion in both childhood and adulthood, prompting for concrete real-world examples rather than general self-report, and it covers the functional impairment required for a diagnosis.

The training covers how to use the DIVA-5 in practice. Separate licensing or permissions may apply depending on how the tool is accessed and used in your setting.

Yes. The content is built around NICE guideline NG87 on ADHD diagnosis and management, including its requirement for a full clinical and psychosocial assessment, a full developmental and psychiatric history, and observer reports. We also cover NG87's position that a diagnosis should not be made solely on the basis of rating scale or observational data.

No. This course covers adult ADHD assessment. Child and adolescent assessment uses different tools, different informants and different developmental considerations, so training in adult assessment does not transfer.

Yes. If you assess within an NHS role you are usually covered by your employer, but you should confirm that ADHD assessment sits within your agreed scope and job plan. If you assess independently you need your own professional indemnity, and providers will typically ask about your registration, training and supervision arrangements. Arrange cover before you see your first patient.
